‘World News Tonight’ Again Tops Season Ratings, But All Networks See Year-Over-Year Audience Erosion

World News Tonight

Network news divisions still count the end of the third week of September as the end of their season, and while that may be a bit of linear TV throwback, it’s a chance to get a snapshot of where things stand audience wise.

ABC News‘ World News Tonight continued its winning streak as the most-watched evening newscast for the eighth straight season, and even as the number one show in all of broadcast and cable, with and without sports, for 24 of the 52 weeks, per ABC.

But year-over-year numbers are down across the board for all the networks, likely reflecting the audience declines overall in linear TV.

For the 2023-24 season, World News Tonight averaged 7.72 million viewers, down 5% from a season earlier, while NBC Nightly News averaged 6.44 million, down 4%; and CBS Evening News averaged 4.65 million, down 4%.

In the 25-54 demo, World News Tonight averaged 1.07 million, down 17%, while NBC Nightly News was at 955,000, down 14%; and CBS Evening News was at 665,000, down 12%.

NBC Nightly News showed audience gains in the third quarter, boosted by its coverage of the Olympics. For the three month period, World News Tonight averaged 7.31 million, down 4% from the same period a year earlier; NBC Nightly News averaged 6.2 million, up 1%; and CBS Evening News averaged 4.34 million, down 2%.

In the 25-54 demo, World News Tonight averaged 995,000, down 13%, compared to NBC Nightly News with 961,000, down 5%, and CBS Evening News with 608,000, down 9%.

NBC Nightly News did score a ratings win in the adults 18-49 category in the third quarter, edging out World News Tonight with an average of 689,000 viewers. The ABC broadcast averaged 678,000, and CBS Evening News averaged 404,000. Year over year, NBC News says that it has narrowed the gap with ABC News in the demos and by 10% in total viewers.

For the week of Sept. 16, World News Tonight averaged 7.18 million viewers, down 4% from the same period a year earlier, compared to NBC Nightly News with 5.61 million viewers, down 9% and CBS Evening News at 4.47 million viewers, from 4.46 million a year earlier.

The week was the first full one following the end of Disney blackout on DirecTV systems. It also was the first week after the Sept. 10 presidential debate, which was followed by claims on the right that the World News Tonight audience has suffered amid a backlash over co-moderators David Muir and Linsey Davis. President Donald Trump and his allies claimed bias when the moderators fact checked some of his wildest claims. But the 4% year-over-year decline also is in line with the year-over-year overall erosion of the evening news audience.

It’s the end of the 2023-2024 TV season as we knew it, and you’d better believe that David Muir is feeling fine.

With the week of September 16 in the history books, the World News Tonight host and the rest of the ABC News team can celebrate their own Triple Crown: another week, quarter, and season at the top of the evening news charts. According to live plus same-day data from Nielsen, WNT drew total viewer audiences of 7.184 million total viewers for the previous week, 7.305 million for 2024’s third quarter, and 7.717 million for the full 2023-2024 season. Apparently, seven isn’t only a lucky number for Josh Hartnett.

NOTE: On Friday (9/20/24), “World News Tonight” was retitled to “WNT-ABC,” and “CBS Evening News” was retitled to “CBS Evening Nws.” The retitled telecasts are excluded from the weekly and season averages. ABC’s and CBS’ weekly averages are based on four days (Monday-Thursday).

World News Tonight also won the Adults 25-54 demo in all three periods, with 949,000 viewers for the week, 995,000 for Q3, and 1.072 million for the season. Week-to-week, WNT saw a +4% gain in total viewers and a -2% dip in the demo, while the quarter-to-quarter stats netted out at a +1% gain in the former category and a +4% bump in the latter.

ABC notes that this is WNT’s eighth season as the top evening newscast in total viewers and the demo, the first time in 28 years that it took first place in that many consecutive seasons. Additionally, Muir proved to be one of the network’s biggest primetime stars as World News Tonight finished as the No. 1 program in total viewers across all of broadcast and cable for 24 out of the last 52 weeks (with and without sports).

NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt claimed the silver medal across the week, quarter, and season in both measured categories. In total viewers, the NBC News program averaged 5.612 million for the week of Sept. 16, 6.197 million for Q3, and 6.437 million for the 2023-2024 season. Nightly News saw a stumble of -7% compared to the previous week but rose quarter-to-quarter with a +9% gain from Q2.

NBC did see a smaller viewership gap between itself and ABC in the A25-54 demo. Nightly News pulled in 826,000 viewers for a -6% dip compared to the prior week. In Q3, though, the newscast attracted 961,000 viewers for a +33% gain over Q2—only 34,000 viewers behind WNT. Credit can most likely go to the 2024 Paris Olympics, which powered Nightly News to its own gold medal performance. For the full season, NBC’s demo audience measured in at 955,000.

NBC notes that Nightly News had its best competitive season in four years in those closely-watched demos. The newscast also took the No. 1 spot as the most-watched TV program for three consecutive weeks during Q3, excluding specials, sports, and syndication.

That brings us to the CBS Evening News with Norah O’Donnell, which was the No. 3 program of the week, quarter, and season in both total viewers and the demo. In better news, it was the only evening newscast to see week-to-week gains in both of those measured categories, attracting 4.470 million total viewers for a +2% bump and 684,000 A25-54 viewers for a +4% bump.

Quarter-to-quarter, CBS News was watched by 4.337 million total viewers and 608,000 A25-54 viewers for a dip of -1% in the former category and a lift of +2% in the latter. For the entire season, the newscast saw a total viewer audience of 4.651 million and a demo crowd of 665,000.

It’s also the last season that will be anchored in full by O’Donnell, who will be stepping down following the 2024 presidential election to focus more on interviews and big projects. John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois will be taking over as the newscast comes home to New York City after five years in Washington, D.C.
