Superstar Rajinikanth and Amitabh Bachchan’s recently released film, Vettaiyan, took the second biggest opening for a Tamil film in 2024. The film, directed by TJ Gnanavel, however, failed to beat Thalapathy Vijay’s The Greatest of All Time aka GOAT. Going by the early trade reports, Vettaiyan will see an incline in numbers for the next three days, capitalising on the Dussehra holidays. Vettaiyan put up approximately Rs 30 crore (nett) at the domestic box office on its first day in theatres.
Vettaiyan released in theatres on October 10 amid massive anticipation. The film, which promised to show the best of Rajinikanth and TJ Gnanavel, received mixed reports.
The action drama with a message on extrajudicial killings and educational scams reportedly raked in Rs 30 crore nett in India, according to the tracking website, Sacnilk. The major contribution came from the Tamil version as it earned Rs 26.15 crore on the opening day. The Telugu version collected Rs 3.2 crore, while the Hindi and Kannada versions minted Rs 60 lakh and Rs 50 lakh, respectively.
Vettaiyan became the second biggest opener in Tamil cinema this year, with GOAT being the top opener. While Vettaiyan clocked in Rs 30 crore (nett), GOAT earned approximately Rs 44 crore nett in India on Day 1.

Vettaiyan is an action drama, directed by TJ Gnanavel. The film features Rajinikanth, Amitabh Bachchan, Rana Daggubati, Fahadh Faasil, Manju Warrier, Abhirami, Dushara Vijayan and Ritika Singh in pivotal roles. The film’s screenplay is jointly written by Gnanavel and B Kiruthika.
Bankrolled by Sun Pictures, the film’s music is composed by Anirudh Ravichander. Cinematographer SR Kathir and editor Philomin Raj are part of the technical team.
Fans celebrate Vettaiyan’s release with dance, crackers
Fans of superstar Rajinikanth celebrated the release of his much-awaited film ‘Vettaiyan’ with great excitement across Tamil Nadu.
The movie is screening in 20 theatres across Dindigul district in Tamil Nadu, including 8 in the city and 12 in nearby areas like Chinnalapatti, Vathalakundu, Palani, and Ottanchathiram.
From bursting crackers to performing special rituals, the excitement of Rajinikanth’s fans was seen in full swing in several cities and towns as the movie hit theatres worldwide.
Special pujas were performed, at Karpagavinayagar Temple and fans carried paalkudam (milk pots) to the theatres, continuing the celebrations with joy and excitement.
