Samsung Reaches Agreement with Protesting Workers in Chennai Over Wage Hike Demands

- Special Incentive: Workers will receive a Productivity Stabilisation Incentive of ₹5,000 per month from October 2024 through March 2025. This incentive will also be considered during future wage negotiations for the financial year 2025-26.
- Improved Working Conditions: The agreement commits to enhancing workplace conditions, including expanding air-conditioned bus services for employees and introducing welfare measures such as life insurance, paternity leave, meal allowances, and cash rewards.
- Community Engagement: Samsung has pledged to engage directly with workers to address their challenges and contribute positively to the local community in Chennai.
- Feedback Mechanism: The company plans to launch the MD’s People First Promise programme, which will create channels for employees to provide feedback on their working conditions.
Continued Strikes by CITU
Despite this agreement, not all workers have returned to work. The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), which represents a significant portion of the workforce, has stated that their strike will continue until their demand for formal recognition of SIWU is met. CITU leaders argue that while the MoU addresses some immediate concerns, it does not fulfill all their demands.
