Railway Employees Arrested for Fabricating Sabotage Plot to Earn Rewards

In a shocking incident, three railway employees in Surat, Gujarat were arrested for allegedly tampering with railway tracks in an attempt to stage a sabotage plot. The trio, identified as Subhash Poddar, Manish Mistry, and Shubham Jaiswal, conspired to remove fishplates and elastic clips from the tracks to make it appear as if there was a sabotage attempt. Their aim was to be felicitated and earn rewards for averting a potential train derailment.
The Fabricated Incident

On September 21, 2024, the accused railway staffers, who work as trackmen, reported to their superiors that they had discovered the tracks between Kosamba and Kim stations tampered with. They claimed to have found two fishplates removed and placed on a parallel track, along with several bolts loosened, in an apparent attempt to derail trains. However, the investigation revealed that the trio had fabricated the entire incident. They had removed the fishplates and clips themselves and taken videos and photos of the compromised track at different intervals starting from 2:56 am to 4:57 am. The time period between the passing of the last train and the discovery of the tampering was too short for the accused to have removed the parts.
Motive and Confession
According to Surat Superintendent of Police Hitesh Joysar, the three accused confessed to the crime after intense questioning. Their motive was to ensure they would be deployed on night duty again, which would give them more time to spend with their families during the day. Poddar, a BSc graduate employed with the railways for nine years, came up with the idea as their night duty for the monsoon season was about to end.
Consequences and Lessons
The three railway employees have been arrested and booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, Railway Act, and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of integrity and accountability in the railway system. It also highlights the need for robust security measures and regular monitoring to prevent such fabricated incidents from occurring in the future.Railway authorities must take stringent action against employees who engage in such unethical practices and ensure that genuine efforts to maintain track safety are recognized and rewarded. Public trust in the railway system is paramount, and incidents like this can severely undermine it.
