Several parts of Chennai witnessed a power supply cut on Thursday night following a fire accident near Manali substation in North Chennai.
Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) Managing Director Rajesh Lakhani stated that the starting point of the fire was inside the substation.
He added that the fire and rescue service personnel were attempting to douse the flames.Lakhani stated that the fire was not caused by an overload, as the demand was lower than it typically is in summer.
He suggested that the fire might have been caused by an equipment malfunction. He also mentioned that 50 per cent of the city’s power, particularly in areas like RA Puram, Mylapore, and Pulianthope, would be restored shortly, with teams currently working on establishing a bypass line.
The remaining power supply would be restored without much delay, he added. However, residents in several neighbourhoods reported experiencing prolonged power cuts.Meanwhile, several residents of Chennai tweeted about the blackout in the city. One of them posted that due to a fire in the Manali substation, power has been cut off in several areas in the city.
Another user asked for updates from the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board on the cause of the fire and the estimated time for electricity restoration.
A local resident tweeted that the streetlights on Anna Salai Road were not functioning.
Another local resident stated that the “elderly people are suffering with heavy palpitation and BP (Blood Pressure) issues. And I heard that a lot of areas in Chennai don’t have power. Please sort it out!”
Major roads, including Anna Salai and Central, witnessed heavy traffic jams as two-wheeler riders and motorists struggled due to the lack of street lighting.
A senior TANGEDCO official mentioned that an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the fire.
“The feeder lines were also damaged in the fire, but we are working swiftly to restore power connections across the city,” the official said, adding that the situation would return to normal by late night.
The fire caused significant inconvenience, but authorities assured that the issue was being addressed with priority.
