Megastar Amitabh Bachchan all praises for singer Sonu Nigam; says ‘bade guni aur gyaani hai’

The latest episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati 16 was a heartwarming and musical delight as it featured two of India’s most iconic singers, Shreya Ghoshal and Sonu Nigam, in the Shukravaar Karamveer Special. Hosted by the legendary Amitabh Bachchan, the episode was filled with emotional moments, trivia, and soulful music. The special appearance of Shreya Ghoshal and Sonu Nigam made the show even more memorable, with both stars using their platform to support a noble cause—the Smit Foundation, an old age home that provides care and assistance to abandoned elderly parents.
The episode began with a grand musical note, as Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghoshal serenaded the audience by singing Tumko Paaya Hoon Ke Khoya Hoon. It was a beautiful moment that set the tone for an emotional and uplifting episode. For Shreya, this was her debut on the famed hot seat of Kaun Banega Crorepati, and she couldn’t hide her excitement and nervousness. Addressing Amitabh Bachchan, she said, “Be it the hot seat or you as the host, this prestigious platform is deeply connected to all our lives. And receiving the opportunity to come on the show today not only makes me feel nervous but excited as well.”
In a heartening gesture to put her at ease, Amitabh Bachchan praised Sonu Nigam for his intelligence, saying, “Sonu bade guni aur gyaani hai.” He encouraged Shreya to look to Sonu for inspiration whenever she felt unsure.
Shreya and Sonu were on the show to raise funds for the Smit Foundation, an organization that takes care of elderly citizens abandoned by their families. The duo introduced Yojana Gharata, the pillar of support for the foundation, who shared the heartbreaking stories of the 126 elderly citizens under her care. Amitabh Bachchan, moved by her work, referred to Yojana as “Devi” and praised her immense contribution to society.
During a poignant moment, Sonu Nigam narrated a touching story about an elderly citizen who had been beaten to death by her own son. The revelation brought tears to the eyes of everyone present, including the studio audience and Shreya Ghoshal. Yojana, overwhelmed with emotions, was assured by Shreya that she would regularly visit the Smit Foundation from then on.
With the emotions running high, the game resumed, and the duo faced their first question: “Which of these devices would one usually say ‘testing 1,2,3’ into?” The answer was Option A) Mic, and they won the amount easily.
In between questions, Amitabh Bachchan engaged Shreya in a conversation about her love for movies. She fondly recalled her childhood in Rawatbhata, Rajasthan, where Khuda Gawah was the first movie she ever saw on a VCR. The memory brought back nostalgia, and to honor the moment, both Shreya and Sonu performed the title track from Khuda Gawah, which left everyone in awe.
As the game progressed, Shreya and Sonu correctly answered the Rs 10,000 question about the dish French toast and then faced the ‘Super Sawaal’: “Which actor has directed the films Shivaay, Runway 34, and Bholaa?” Sonu correctly answered Ajay Devgn and won the superpower ‘Dugnastraa’.
Amitabh Bachchan then revealed an interesting fact about the duo’s bond—they have collaborated on 127 songs over their 25-year-long professional relationship. As a fun challenge, Big B asked them to sing each other’s songs, and the result was nothing short of magical.
For the Rs 1,60,000 question, the duo used their superpower ‘Dugnastraa’ to answer, “For which 1997 movie was Javed Akhtar honored with his second successive National Film Award for Best Lyricist?” They correctly chose Border and won the amount. Sonu Nigam even sang Sandese Aate Hain at Big B’s request.
The duo then tackled a Rs 3,20,000 question about Rishi Bharadwaja’s suggestion to Lord Rama to build a hermitage in the forest. With the help of the audience, they answered correctly: Chitrakuta.
In one of the episode’s most memorable moments, Sonu Nigam expressed his deep admiration for Amitabh Bachchan, saying, “Sir aapko toh pata he hai saari duniya aap ki fan hai aur main toh aapka andha bhakt hoon.” Sonu and Shreya then paid tribute to Big B by singing a medley of his iconic film songs. To everyone’s delight, Amitabh Bachchan joined in, making the tribute even more special.

Shreya and Sonu continued to play brilliantly, winning Rs 25,00,000 with their final question: “Which of these musicians participated in a recording session with Led Zeppelin when the band visited Mumbai in 1972?” With the help of the audience poll, they correctly answered Ustad Sultan Khan. The duo decided to donate their winnings to the Smit Foundation, with the show’s makers adding an additional Rs 5,00,000.
