Govinda suffered the injury around 4.45 am today when he was getting ready to leave for the airport to board a flight to Kolkata
Mumbai:
Hours after he landed in a Mumbai hospital due to a bullet injury on his leg, renowned actor Govinda released an audio clip in which he thanked his fans for their blessings. The actor suffered the injury below his knee when his licensed gun misfired.
In a raspy voice, the 60-year-old actor is heard saying that the blessings of his fans, parents and his guru saved him. “I was hit by a bullet, but it has been extracted. I thank the doctors here and your prayers,” he said in the audio clip.
The actor suffered the injury around 4.45 am today when he was getting ready to leave for the airport to board a flight to Kolkata. The actor, also a Shiv Sena leader, was alone at the time of the incident.
His manager Shashi Sinha said Govinda was keeping his licensed revolver in a cupboard when it fell to the floor and went off. The bullet hit him below his knee. The actor called up his wife Sunita Ahuja, who was in Kolkata, and his manager. Soon after, police reached his Juhu home and rushed him to the nearby Criticare Hospital. The actor’s manager said his condition is stable. He is still at the hospital and his daughter Tina is with him.
Police have said the actor has not registered any complaint.
“We had a 6 am flight to catch for a show in Kolkata and I had reached the airport. Govinda ji was about to leave his residence for the airport when this accident happened,” the actor’s manager said. It is due to God’s grace that Govinda ji sustained only a leg injury and it was nothing serious,” he added. Govinda’s wife Sunita Ahuja left for Mumbai after she heard of the incident.
Govinda has released an audio message in which he says: “I was hit by a bullet and it has been extracted now. I thank the doctors and for the prayers of my fans.”
The bullet struck his knee and he was immediately rushed to CRITICare Hospital in Mumbai.
The actor was reportedly cleaning his gun at the time of the incident.
Sources reveal that the actor was preparing to take an early morning flight to Kolkata. Govinda was admitted to the hospital at 5:15 AM, and hospital staff have confirmed that he is now out of danger. The police have visited the scene to investigate the situation and have taken custody of Govinda’s revolver. The incident is currently under investigation.
Govinda’s manager, Shashi Sinha, told ANI, “Actor and Shiv Sena leader Govinda was getting ready to leave for Kolkata. He was keeping his licensed revolver in the case when it fell from his hand and a bullet got fired which hit his leg. The doctor has removed the bullet and his condition is fine. He is in the hospital right now.”
Govinda, a prominent Bollywood star from the 90s, started his acting career in the 80s as an action hero before transitioning to comedy in the mid-90s. He quickly became one of the biggest box office draws of the decade, known not only for his acting but also for his energetic dance moves. However, his career began to falter after 2007, with his last significant commercial hit being Partner, co-starring Salman Khan. In recent years, Govinda has remained absent from the big screen.
Known for his performances in comedy hits such as Coolie No. 1, Haseena Maan Jaayegi, Swarg, Saajan Chale Sasural, Raja Babu, Rajaji, and Partner, Govinda’s last appearance was in the 2019 film Rangeela Raja, directed by Pahlaj Nihalani. Unfortunately, the film failed at the box office, leading to Govinda stepping back from acting.
Although Govinda has taken a hiatus since 2019, there was a time when audiences eagerly awaited his films. Throughout the 80s and 90s, he was one of Bollywood’s top stars. However, after 2007, his career struggled, and Partner remained his last successful film. Despite appearing in 13 films after Partner, none managed to perform well at the box office. Movies like Rangeela Raja, Friday, Aa Gaya Hero, Happy Ending, Kill Dil, Deewana Main Deewana, Loot, Naughty @40, Raavan, Do Knot Disturb, Life Partner, Chala Tala Chal, and Money Hai To Honey Hai were all commercial failures, as noted by Box Office India.
In addition to acting, Govinda ventured into politics, once serving as a Member of Parliament. He joined Shiv Sena earlier this year.
