Bengaluru Student Assaulted by Seniors for Refusing to Shave Beard: A Disturbing Incident Unfolds
In a shocking incident that has raised serious concerns about bullying and ragging in educational institutions, a student at the Krupanidhi Group of Institutions in Bengaluru was brutally assaulted by his seniors after he refused to shave his beard and moustache. This incident, which occurred on August 30, 2024, highlights the urgent need for stricter enforcement of anti-ragging measures in colleges.
The Incident
The victim, identified as Goutham, a second-year BBA aviation student, joined the college in April 2024. Shortly after his arrival, he was pressured by three seniors—Xavier Issac, Vishnu, and Sharath—to shave his facial hair. Despite their repeated demands and intimidation tactics, Goutham stood his ground and refused to comply. On the evening of the assault, Goutham was lured to a secluded area near St. Stephen’s Marthoma Church in Hadosiddapura under the pretense of a conversation. Accompanied by his roommates, he was confronted by a group of approximately ten seniors. When he refused to shave on the spot, he was physically assaulted, resulting in severe injuries, including a fractured shoulder.
Legal Action
Following the attack, Goutham was rushed to a nearby hospital where he underwent surgery for his injuries. His family reported that they received threats from the accused while visiting him in the hospital. A case has been registered against the three seniors under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including charges of voluntarily causing hurt, wrongful restraint, unlawful assembly, and criminal intimidation.
Community Response
The incident has sparked outrage among students, parents, and the broader community, highlighting the pervasive issue of ragging in Indian educational institutions. Many are calling for immediate action from the college administration to ensure the safety and well-being of all students. The college has promised to take appropriate measures against the accused, but the effectiveness of such actions remains to be seen.
Broader Implications
This disturbing incident is not isolated. It echoes a similar case from Jadavpur University that shocked the nation last year, where a student was subjected to horrific bullying and ultimately lost his life. Such incidents underscore the urgent need for educational institutions to implement and enforce strict anti-ragging policies to protect students from harassment and violence.
Conclusion
As the investigation continues, it is crucial for educational institutions to foster a culture of respect and tolerance, where individuality is celebrated rather than punished. The safety of students should be a top priority, and measures must be taken to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future. The community will be watching closely to see how this case unfolds and what actions are taken to ensure justice for Goutham and to protect future students from similar experiences.
